Shawna Walraven Appointed as Bay County Treasurer
The
Bay County Treasurer Appointment Panel appointed Shawna Walraven of Essexville,
Michigan to the position of Bay County Treasurer on Friday February 8, 2019.
The Committee, comprised of Probate Judge Jan Miner, County Clerk Cynthia
Luczak and Prosecuting Attorney Nancy Borushko, is authorized by statute to
fill the vacancy resulting from the retirement of former Bay County Treasurer
Richard Brzezinski. The appointment is for the remainder of the current term
ending December 31, 2020. Ms. Walraven
must run for election on the County Wide ballot to retain her seat for any
subsequent term.
The
Panel received 29 applications and interviewed five candidates. The interviews
were completed over three days and finalized on Thursday February 7, 2019. Each
candidate possessed strong skills and the committee was pleased with the
quality and number of applicants.
It is
the Panel’s desire to see the remaining candidates continue to remain active in
the community and encourage them to continue to seek public service.
Ms.
Walraven earned a Bachelor’s of Science, Finance from DePaul University and a
Juris Doctorate with a concentration in Taxation from St. Louis University
School of Law. In addition, Ms. Walraven earned a Certified Public Manager
certification from Saginaw Valley State University. Ms. Walraven has served as Bay County
Assistant Corporation Counsel since 2014, working with various aspects of the
Treasurer’s office including the Land Bank, property foreclosure process and
the Retirement Board. Throughout her
career, she has proven her ability to create innovative solutions to various
situations and build a consensus among colleagues. Ms. Walraven resides in
Essexville with her husband Brett and two children Zander and Harper. The Panel
members are excited to work with Ms. Walraven in her new position which has an
anticipated start date of February 11, 2019.
