September: National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month. The 2015 campaign theme is "Don't Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today." Bay County encourages everyone to take part, make a plan and know what to do during an emergency. This means having an up-to-date contact list for those you may need to reach during a disaster and establishing alternate methods of communication in case traditional means are not available.

Here are a few easy steps to start your emergency communication plan:
  • Understand how to receive emergency alerts and warnings.
  • Discuss family/household plans for disasters that may affect your area and plan where to go.
  • Collect information.
  • Identify information and pick an emergency meeting place.
  • Share information.
  • Practice your plan.
Another important key to disaster preparedness is to create a kit with a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours.
